The 12 or 24 word recovery seed phrase is the master key for a wallet, from which all related private keys and addresses are derived. As such, the same seed phrase will always recover the same wallet, and it is not possible to change a wallet's seed phrase.
Using the seed phrase, anyone can recover unrestricted access to the wallet, using any compatible non-custodial wallet software. For this reason, the security of a wallet's seed phrase and private keys are critical to maintaining ownership of the assets that it holds.
Thankfully, keeping your wallet secure is easy with Infinity Wallet! As a self-custodial wallet you do not make an account with us, and we never hold or have access to your seed phrase or private keys, they are instead locally stored encrypted on your device. This drastically reduces the risk of your wallet being compromised, as you do not need to trust that it is safely stored on a remote server. Removing all the typical attack vectors that centralized custodian platforms encounter.
You can follow these best practices to help keep your wallet secure:
-
Regularly scan your device for Viruses/Malware/Spyware.
-
Make sure to create your own wallet without assistance from anyone. Especially not someone connecting to your device online that you do not know personally.
-
Make a physical backup of your seed phrase and store it securely.
-
Do not screenshot or save a copy of your seed phrase or private keys on an internet connected device.
-
Use a strong pocket password at all times.
-
Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone, or any wallet or website that you do not trust completely. Infinity Wallet support will never request these.
Note that the pocket password only secures the wallet on your device. If a wallet has already been compromised then changing the password would not re-secure the wallet. The only option in that case would be to create a new wallet with a new seed phrase and send any remaining assets out to it.
